Before a bank in its present form was established in Iran, banking operations had been carried out in traditional form, i.e. through money change. Exchanges of coins and hard currencies date back to very old time in the history.

The first bank in modern day sense called The New East Bank was established in 1850. It was a British bank whose headquarters was in London and opened branches in major Iranian cities.
